What is ECMO and how can ECMO care be improved?

Erasmus MC participates in scientific studies of ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. This is a form of life support that temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs.

In the video above, cardiologist-intensivist Dr Christiaan Meuwese and anesthesiologist-intensivist Dr Dinis Dos Reis Miranda explain how ECMO works. They also talk about two ongoing studies. The first revolves around using ECMO on the street, in people who have suffered cardiac arrest. The second is about fine-tuning ECMO treatment in the hospital.
