What basic research taught scientists about ageing

Fundamental research into aging and aging diseases has taught scientists a lot about how aging works and how this process can be manipulated.

Aging is associated with onset of numerous diseases severely affecting quality of life. In this lecture Prof Jan Hoeijmakers of the Erasmus MC talks about his research into ageing. ‘Studying very rare premature aging DNA repair syndromes in children we found that DNA damage is a major cause of systemic aging and that nutritional interventions keep unexpected promises to promote healthy aging.’
